Solidarity through Sports: A Geographical Reading

The geographical concepts of space, scale, and territory are intertwined with sports. Sport serves as a platform for cultural expression for individuals, regions, and the nation-state. The purpose of this paper is to expand the dialogue on the solidarity approach in human geography through sports. The paper focuses on analyzing the content of sporting events reported in print and social media to substantiate the connections between solidarity, space, and sporting culture. The paper claims that sportsmanship and international cooperation embody the essence of solidarity. Sport has become a means of political action and a platform to express solidarity. The paper investigates the foundation of sports activities, which are essential for bringing communities and individuals together in everyday life and challenges. The paper is divided into three parts. In the initial segment, we explore the sports movements worldwide that have influenced political awareness. In the second part, the focus is on recent advancements at the level of nation-states that have enhanced the subtleties of solidarity. The last part brings the critical issues of the solidarity approach emerging out of sports studies in India. The paper is a contribution to sports studies and the solidarity approach in geography, which aims to narrate the spatial perspective of daily life national culture, and cooperation at the international scale.
