South Asian countries face significant urban challenges as they experience rapid urbanization, including urban heat islands, infrastructure inadequacies, and water crises. This paper examines these interconnected issues across the diverse climatic and geographical landscape of South Asia, encompassing countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Urban heat island effects are exacerbated by the region’s predominantly hot tropical and subtropical climates, with major cities experiencing temperatures several degrees higher than surrounding rural areas. This phenomenon is closely linked to land use changes, as natural vegetation is replaced by heat-absorbing urban surfaces. Concurrently, the region grapples with severe water stress, characterized by groundwater depletion, pollution, and the impacts of climate change on water availability. The paper highlights how rapid urbanization strains existing infrastructure and resources, leading to issues like water stress, heat stress and pollution. To address these challenges, South Asian countries have implemented various policies and collaborative initiatives through organizations like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). These efforts focus on sustainable urban development, including green building codes, urban water management, and climate resilience strategies. The paper concludes that while progress has been made, continued regional cooperation and knowledge sharing are crucial for developing effective, locally appropriate solutions. It emphasizes the need for a solidarity approach to tackle the complex urban challenges faced by South Asian countries, allowing for more efficient resource use and fostering innovation in sustainable urban development.
