The philosophical foundation of solidarity is grounded in a moral and social principle that emphasizes the importance of mutual support, empathy, and cooperation among individuals, communities, and nations. The non-aligned movement (NAM) was established as an international alliance based on solidarity among newly decolonized nations, encompassing various aspects such as social, economic, and political realms. However, the dynamics of world politics, shifts in relative power positions in recent times among decolonized nations, and geopolitical rivalries have introduced new elements and dimensions to alignment and solidarity-based groupings leading to the foundation of new Global South Solidarity. India’s historic geopolitical alignment was not based on countering the hegemon directly but it involved the preservation of the sovereignty of newly decolonized nations and their economic and political autonomy during the Cold War period. Traditionally, India’s geopolitical maneuvering was a combination of pursuing its national interests and fostering solidarity among NAM countries. However, with the decline of the bipolar political order, this solidarity began to diminish due to India’s changing priorities and the imposition of global sanctions following its nuclear detonation toward the end of the twentieth century. Thus, the focus of this new agenda has shifted from maintaining national sovereignty to addressing critical issues such as poverty, terrorism, extremism, energy security, food security, climate change, technology transfer, strategic autonomy, free access to high seas, and promoting sustainable human development. India seeks to leverage this revamped approach to advance its geopolitical interests and effectively counter its adversaries. This study aims to identify the specific factors and components that have led to the transformation of NAM solidarity into Global South Solidarity. This chapter aims to elucidate the current realignment of India and solidarity with struggling nations, focusing particularly on its competition with China for influence in the Indian Ocean Region and Indian subcontinent. This chapter will also visit India’s historical geopolitical goals and its evolution to its current status through the solidarity approach. This research essentially investigates India’s efforts to revive solidarity within the NAM through a fresh approach known as Global South Solidarity and explores the strategies and mechanisms employed by India in pursuit of these goals, highlighting the evolving priorities and challenges associated with this endeavor. By analyzing India’s contrivances to revive NAM solidarity within the context of Global South Solidarity, this study offers valuable insights into India’s geopolitical aspirations and the potential benefits it seeks to gain in its interactions with adversaries, particularly China.
