Innovations in Cultural Tourism for the Revitalisation of Peripheral Territories—The Case Study of San Pellegrino in Alpe
摘要
Cultural tourism emerges as a fundamental element for the revitalisation and repopulation of marginalised and peripheral territories. This assumption is exemplified by initiatives such as the INCULTUM project, which focuses on unlocking the latent potential of peripheral destinations through innovative and participatory models that actively involve local communities in creating and developing tourism-related activities. Examining a case within this framework, the Pisa University Team delves into the pilot case of San Pellegrino in Alpe, a small village located in the valley of Garfagnana, Italy. The village’s tangible and intangible heritage provides an ideal testing ground for a new tourism approach centred on innovation transfer. Despite numerous historical and natural attractions, the primary draw is the ‘Don Luigi Pellegrini’ Provincial Ethnographic Museum, preserving the historical and cultural memory of rural life. The pilot case aims to propose an alternative strategy for mountain and peripheral tourism by redefining the traditional concept of visiting a destination. This involves the integration of new technologies, storytelling elements and interactive tourist participation, creating a multi-sensorial visitor experience that is able to evoke a feeling of authenticity and identification. The primary aim of employing this methodology is to transform the village of San Pellegrino in Alpe into a pilot case for the economic and social rejuvenation of human settlements situated in mountainous regions. The project, adopting a scalability-focused approach, aims to serve as a replicable and successful model for destinations sharing similar characteristics.
