This chapter deals with lip-sounded instruments with finger-holes or keys. The effects on resonances of opening side-holes are discussed. The capabilities of relevant instruments used in historically informed performance—cornetts, serpents, keyed trumpets, keyed bugles and ophicleides—are described. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a more recently invented instrument, the widely used vented trumpet.
