Alonso Ruizpalacios is perhaps the most successful of Mexico’s directors of so-called “festival films” to emerge in the last decade. His trilogy of features is acclaimed at home and abroad with the foreign trade press identifying him as part of a “third generation” of Mexican filmmakers and local critics suggesting he charts a “third way” in Mexican film, between “artistic” cinema with its personal and complex projects and “commercial” movies. This chapter suggests that Ruizpalacios should be seen as the author of not one but two trilogies, cinematic and televisual, only the first of which has been studied. Moreover, his practice of TV in Mexico (as sole screenwriter and director) precedes and succeeds his practice of film on the international festival circuit. Crosscutting between the two media, the chapter compares Güeros (2014) with Drenaje profundo (“Deep Drainage” 2010), Museo (2018) with XY: La revista (“XY: The Magazine” 2009–12), and Una película de policías (“A Cop Movie” 2021) with Narcos: Mexico (2018).
