Brief Historical Overview of Switched Reluctance Machines

This chapter provides a historical and technological overview of switched reluctance machines (SRMs), tracing their development from William Hannis Taylor’s invention in 1838 to their modern applications. Operating on the principle of minimizing magnetic reluctance, SRMs initially faced limitations due to the lack of electronic switching technologies. However, advances in power electronics and microprocessors in the 20th century refined their design, establishing them as efficient and resilient alternatives to conventional electric motors. SRMs are distinguished for their simple construction, low manufacturing cost, and reliable performance, especially in harsh environments and at high speeds. Applications span the automotive, aerospace, and distributed energy sectors, with increasing use in wind turbines and electric vehicles. Recent progress in hybrid topologies and intelligent control strategies has addressed challenges such as torque ripple and acoustic noise. Adaptive algorithms and AI-based control methods further enhance their efficiency. This chapter concludes with a positioning of SRMs as a strategic solution for sustainability and electrification, with significant potential for growth in emerging applications and renewable energy systems.
