The petroliferous economic importance of the Anambra Basin highlights the significance of the basin forming tectonics and basin fills, substantiated by the eustatic sea level dimensions in sub Saharan African region depositional space that triggered several geologic formations and various economic resources inherent in the study. The unconformity system of the Anambra Basin reveals it as a distinct sedimentary basin overlying the Benue Trough as a separate lithostratigraphic domain of Late Campanian to Danian sedimentary units inherent in the Nkporo Group, Mamu, Ajali and Nsukka formations. The origin and tectonic events of the studied sedimentary basin were scientifically upheld as mantle plume model, plate tectonic model, the subduction model and pull apart origin tectonic evolution models by variable scholarly scientific debate to explain the evolution of the Anambra Basin and the older Benue Trough. In affirmation of geologic and scientific controversy of the Anambra Basin’s origin, a tectonic evolution model was confirmed and the Anambra Basin was deemed as a separate basin resulting from the concomitant folding with the up-doming of the Abakaliki Basin (Benue Trough) and down-warping of the Anambra “platform’ basin during the Santonian. The longitudinally faulted crust megatectonic structure, breakup of the West Gondwana supercontinent and the contemporaneous rifting of the Abakaliki domain and the Anambra Basin terrane sag that climaxed during the separation of south America from the African plate, illustrated as geologically accepted consensus and interpretation of the tectonic origin of the studied basin. The geologic debate and tectonic origin model quagmire of Anambra Basin highlights the principle of uniformitarianism as a geologic concept applied and updated with a series of research to buttress the scientific growth inherent in geology research.
