Technological advancement has taken shape at a significant rate over the recent years, further cementing itself as a vital part of life, more than it already is. Artificial Intelligence is one technological feat that introduced a new era of a never-ending cycle of advancements with new features and updates emerging daily. ChatGPT which is a Large Language Model that generates answers, research papers, essays, and much more based on the trained data that was collected from the entirety of the public internet. It started as any other AI model tool but soon grew to become the most advanced AI chatbot open to public use. In line with the continuous advancements of ChatGPT, ethical concerns have grown proportionally due to its massive capabilities that users can exploit and commit ethical misconduct, especially in the academic scene. Such ethical concerns include but not limited to plagiarism, cheating, impact on critical thinking, and spreading misinformation. This research paper explores these concerns and the state of ChatGPT use which reflects on academia by analysing literature findings and presenting the results of a survey done by students to examine whether these ethical concerns are grounded by evidence. It was found that most students do in fact unethically use ChatGPT for different purposes. Thus, through the analysis and findings, it was concluded that ChatGPT poses a threat on academic integrity and would require the establishment of advanced AI detection tools and ethical teaching and awareness amongst students.
