Purpose: The study examines how effective green marketing is, as well as how greenwashing affects customer trust. Identifying the many aspects that influence consumer perception will provide insight into businesses and policymakers on how to promote true sustainability, prevent greenwashing, and allow consumers to make decisions that match their environmental beliefs. Design/Methodology/Approach: The method used is a quantitative research design, and the analysis is based on a survey. For this, the sample size is 254 consumers residing in Bengaluru, India. Regarding this, the stratified sampling method will be used to ensure that the selected sample is representative. This approach has been employed to gather significant information about consumer perception of green marketing and greenwashing. Result: It shows that perceived brand transparency has a positive impact on consumer trust in green marketing efforts. Furthermore, the more skeptical an individual is when it comes to advertising, the more capable they become at identifying actual greenwashing practices. Conclusion: The study also reveals that heightened awareness and knowledge of green marketing on the part of consumers enhance their ability to detect greenwashing. Greenwashing significantly erodes consumers’ trust in products and ultimately affects purchasing behavior. Business recommendations include communicating real green practices to avoid being termed as greenwashing and to help regain consumer trust. Originality/Value: This provides new insights into how consumer awareness and brand transparency relate to the effectiveness and trust in green marketing. It gives practical suggestions to businesses regarding how they can communicate authentically and reduce greenwashing, hence contributing to the knowledge base in the area of sustainable consumerism.
