The accumulation of paraffin, waxes, and asphaltenes in the oil and gas industries presents significant challenges, impacting production and transportation processes and resulting in reduced efficiency and increased operational costs. Conventional methods for their removal and degradation often rely on harsh chemicals or costly physical techniques, which are both environmentally detrimental and economically unsustainable. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in exploring alternative, eco-friendly approaches for addressing these hydrocarbon compounds. This chapter provides an overview of various types of fungi that have been investigated for the degradation of paraffin, waxes, and asphaltenes, along with the enzymatic mechanisms involved in the degradation process. Emphasis has been given to the challenges associated with fungal degradation and the strategies employed to optimize their performance in industrial settings. Additionally, the potential synergistic effects of combining fungi with other biological agents or chemical treatments are explored.
