Oil and gas industry deals with the supply of crude oil and gas for the fulfillment of energy requirement of the world. The crude oil and gas are recovered from subsurface reservoirs and supplied to refineries and petrochemical industries. The unrestricted flow of crude oil and gases through the pores of the reservoir, through the flowlines connecting subsurface reservoir and surface facilities, and through pipelines transporting the crude oil to the refineries is important to maintain the energy needs of the world. Crude oil, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons, can have varying molecular weight ranging from 100 to 1000, and have different flowability in reservoir pores and flowlines. The heavier crude oil will have most difficulty in flowing due to presence of higher amount of asphaltene, paraffin, and resins. Heavy crude oil also suffers from the deposition of these hydrocarbon components, which restricts the available path for flow and hampers the production from the reservoir, and transport of the crude oil through pipelines. The deposition also causes a significant increase in the required pressure for maintaining the flow through the pipelines. The extended deposition of hydrocarbons can also completely block a flow path and halt the production of crude oil. The hampered production due to deposition issues may lead to missed opportunities to capitalize on favorable market conditions or to meet production targets. The overall profitability of oil and gas operations can be impacted as a result. The chapter deals with various strategies, including chemical inhibitors, mechanical cleaning methods, pigging operations (pipeline cleaning tools), employed by the oil and gas industries to mitigate these production impacts.
