IoT and Wireless Sensors: Energy Efficiency in WSNs

IoT refers to the technology that allows devices to communicate with each other. By integrating wireless sensors into various objects and connecting them to a network, information can be collected and exchanged seamlessly. The wireless sensor is one of many emerging creations of the new technology. The device detects and measures a physical quantity from the environment, such as light, heat, pressure, and transforms it into a digital value that can be processed and routed to the base station. The deployment of multiple wireless sensors communicating over wireless radio forms a wireless sensors network (WSN). Several constraints prevent a well-maintained deployment of these networks. Energy consumption is one of the most important challenges for wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensor nodes are battery-powered with a very limited energy capacity, and it is often difficult or even impossible to replace the sensors or their batteries due to their frequently inaccessible deployment locations. This constraint presents numerous challenges in the development of hardware and software, as well as in the deployment of architectures and routing protocols for sensor networks. The uneven distribution of energy across all the nodes in the network also poses a problem affecting the coverage of sensing areas, creating what is are known as energy holes. In this work, we propose improvements to hierarchical routing protocols to optimize the lifespan of the networks and ensure a good distribution of energy.
