Waste-to-Energy Solutions for Sustainable Food Waste Management

Worldwide, the accumulation of food waste has become a major problem due to industrialization. The sources of food waste generation are cultivation, preservation, and utilization. Generally, food wastes (FW) are left to decompose naturally or burn to produce energy, severely impacting human health and the environment. Thus, it is necessary to process the FW into a renewable energy source for a sustainable environment since fossil fuels are depleting rapidly. The emerging field of the transformation of FW into bioenergy is most promising and helps to meet the current global energy demand. This chapter highlights the significance of various methods for converting FW into energy. Most importantly, the performance of the respective biological processes, such as anaerobic, fermentation, and thermochemical processes, namely incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification for bioenergy production from FW, have been addressed. This chapter provides an outlook for the efficient and effective approach for FW to energy as an alternate solution for sustainable food waste management.
