Quality of Information and Democracy highlights the necessity of quality journalism as a fundamental pillar of democracy, beginning with a theoretical overview of the concept of journalistic quality and its evaluation. This section analyses the results of various studies that point to a decline in journalistic quality within the Spanish context, attributed to a lack of economic and political independence in the media, digital transformations, and low business investment in an environment marked by the effects of the crisis and precarious labour conditions. In addition to expert and media professional analyses, the chapter includes an extensive public assessment of journalistic work. A concerning diagnosis is made regarding the deterioration of content quality in recent years. Survey data are used to detail both the main causes that, according to the public, contribute to the decline in quality and the content deemed most problematic, as well as the management practices that either hinder or promote journalistic quality. The chapter also includes proposals from various theorists on how to improve quality and outlines alternative solutions for citizens to find more relevant content. The survey further assesses public perception to determine who holds responsibility for information quality.
