This chapter sketches an emerging orientation in engineering education, by proposing the reciprocal articulation of the concepts of Bildung and of citizenship through the paradigm of “existential citizenship.” After introducing the original notion of Bildung, rooted in nineteenth-century German culture, we propose its integration with the concept of citizenship. The latter helps us transcend individual-focused readings of education in favor of the uptake of responsibility for the world, understood in the arendtian sense of political action. The result is the concept of existential citizenship, which we offer as a guide for thinking about engineering education; the existential dimension of this concept focuses attention on the education for humanity inherent in the notion of Bildung, whilst retaining the political dynamic of investment in the transformation of the city.

摘要
