Augmented Creativity: Augmenting the Archaeological Imagination with Generative AI Tools

This chapter addresses the complexity of visual rendering of the past with software tools using Generative AI to fill in a large volume of data not found in the archaeological record, data that may come from ethnographic studies or archaeological experiments, as a result of a collaborative human–computer process using prompts. The interior of a Chalcolithic house (5th millennium BC) in Southeast Europe was reconstructed with traditional 3D modelling methods for the understanding of prehistoric daily life. In the virtual reconstructions, a series of objects generated by Generative AI tools based on publicly available ethnographic and experimental archaeological data (texts, images) were positioned as augmentations of virtuality. During this research, two commercial Generative AI tools, one of general purpose and one dedicated to image generation, were used for experimentation and evaluation. The results of the present research dedicated to the Augmented Creativity concept are shared through this chapter with the purpose of proposing the augmentation of the archaeological imagination and creativity with the use of Generative AI tools.
