This study explores media discussions on artificial intelligence (AI) in Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico from 2014 to 2024. Using opinion columns from two major media outlets in each country, we conduct sentiment analysis, opinion identification and classification, and comparative frequency analysis to identify key topics, sentiments, and opinions related to AI. Our findings show that AI’s prominence in the media has grown significantly, with discussions shifting from early theoretical debates over increased interest in its transformative potential and practical applications, to rising concerns about ethics, regulation, and the societal impact of AI. We also found that the COVID-19 pandemic and the release of ChatGPT significantly influenced and shaped public discourse, highlighting AI’s transformative potential and raising urgent questions about its risks. Additionally, we identified localized debates and varied national perspectives: Argentina focused on philosophical and ethical issues, Colombia concentrated on public safety and labor impacts, and Mexico emphasized technological advancements and societal integration. These regional perspectives underscore the importance of inclusive governance frameworks that reflect Latin America’s diverse contexts.
