One important, yet neglected, area of focus of stigma within higher education is in the training of mental health professionals. In this chapter, I center my discussion on how stigma is introduced and reinforced by mental health graduate programs (counseling, psychology, and social work). I discuss the impact of this stigma on the development of skills and the use of language by students training to be a mental health professional, using programs within the United States as example. I propose ways to alter the development and delivery of the curriculum to challenge mental illness stigma.
