The Slide Towards Collecting Context Conformity
摘要
The historical background to collecting described in Chap. 2 , suggests that the contexts central to this book were very distinct domains prior to the Icon Age. However, the analysis reported in this book suggests that, with the arrival of the Icon Age, the gap between the contexts has been narrowing. This becomes apparent when digital objects form part of collections, when digital indexes are employed, and when IT systems are designed to enable better access to collections and to information about them. Instances where narrowing has occurred within particular elements of the practice hierarchy, are described. The overall conclusion is that the gap has narrowed between the different contexts, and that this is due to a combination of the following: contemporary internet facilities; easily accessed software facilities and cloudCloud services; the ease with which objects can be digitised; and the uniformity of IT activities.
