The collecting contexts described in the previous chapter and our later findings emerged from analysis of the research materials described in this chapter. These include: accumulations assembled by the authors (a loft experiment; two sets of mementos; a special correspondence of 1500 emails; and a collection of data from an academic study); the authors’ files—one amassed and maintained for over 40 years and now wholly digitised; one author’s lifetime collection of letters; the results of an investigation into one of the author’s household filesHousehold files; consultancy studies by one of the authors looking at two large commercial archives and four major museums and galleries; one author’s investigation into a major private collection of sporting memorabilia; the authors’ amateur collections of chocolate wrappersChocolate Wrappers, stamps, photos, recorded/sheet musicSheet music, and books; and two experiments by one of the authors—one to assemble story boards from objects in the other collections, and the other to assemble certificates, trophies, significant work outputs, and publications into a digital trophy gallery. Many of these collections were analysed by closely examining the practices associated with their assembly. The outcomes of this were used to create the practice hierarchy described in the following chapter. An extensive literature search was also undertaken to verify the hierarchy.
