From Conflict to Connection: Harnessing Emotions in the Workplace with the EmC Method
摘要
What if managers knew how to bring people together when difficult situations arise rather than watch them disengage and depart? This chapter introduces a conceptual model that empowers leaders to use and harness positive and negative emotions that emerge from conflict in the workplace with a formal strategy for emotional connection. This effective method uses a scientific framework of attachment, emotional connection, and adult bonding to provide a step-by-step structure with specific techniques that manage emotions safely and appropriately to address fears/needs, create bonding conversations, and repair conflict through reconnection. Building on Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, this method uses the Emotional Connection (EmC) Strategy in work relationships and centers on the systematic exploration of emotions present during moments of distress and interpersonal workplace conflicts, which can be shifted toward opportunities for connection, bonding, and thriving. This method, which is grounded in attachment science, introduces a formula for leaders to help team members process their emotions rather than become caught up in the details of workplace drama. This conceptual model provides a systematic and replicable process to help employees articulate their feelings of hurt, isolation, loneliness, and/or rejection while managers learn how to respond in a way that fosters safety and connection.
