The Sociocultural Context of Well-Being: The Case of Poland
摘要
Sociocultural contexts may affect well-being in profound and often hidden ways. In this chapter I name factors that have most probably played an important role in shaping the Polish emotional climate. In the first part of the chapter, I focus on Polish history as the reference point for discussing the cultural context of well-being. The second part of the chapter is a literature review in which the current psychological research on emotional regulation and well-being in Poland is presented and analysed in connection to the previously discussed historical factors. I focus on two lines of research, the first documenting an intriguingly high rate of probable PTSD in Poland and the second supporting the hypothesis that Poland is a culture of complaining. The provided evidence points to the conclusion that Poland constitutes a negative emotional environment. The consequences for the individual well-being and social functioning are discussed.
