Positive and Negative Affect Across Cultures: The Case of Latin Americans
摘要
Affect is a psychological construct related to mental states involving evaluative feelings presented in positive or negative valences. Levels of joy, enthusiasm, and concentration define positive affect. Levels of anger, anguish, and nervousness characterise negative affect. Undoubtedly, there are differences between cultures in the manifestation of affection. Therefore, this chapter aims to differentiate the cultural values that interact with positive and negative affect, especially among Latinos in South and Central America in the international context. Latino refers to an ethnic group with common cultural origins whose members come from different Latin American countries. The methodology was a scoping review. Regarding positive affect, studies point out that many Latinos thrive even in situations of adversity. Some of the characteristics are expressing joy, sympathy, and solidarity. It should also be noted that positive affect has a learning and family component. In Latin culture, the family plays a fundamental role, especially in terms of emotional support, expressions, and affective communication, which are crucial for well-being. On the other hand, negative affections have a more significant innate component and are influenced by biological and gender issues. A person with a greater predisposition to experience more negative affections may be at greater risk of anxious and depressive symptoms. Finally, the main findings and indications on Positive and Cross-Cultural Psychology and the influences of affections on mental health, focusing on Latin American immigrants, are presented.
