This text seeks to reinterpret the Berlin Wall as an involuntary monument to anti-fascist memory. Contrary to the prevailing notion that the Berlin Wall was primarily a product of the Cold War, this analysis posits that the Wall represents a core material remnant reflecting Germany’s defeat in World War II and its crimes against humanity under National Socialism. Material memories embedded in urban landscapes can serve either to expose or obscure ideological processes. This chapter argues that the urban division of Berlin, symbolised by the iconic wall, was a direct consequence of German fascism. Furthermore, it critiques the narratives surrounding the Wall’s “fall”, suggesting that these narratives dilute the memory of the victims, the perpetrators, and the broader repercussions of National Socialism. In doing so, the chapter highlights the ways in which urban materialities are implicated in shaping collective memory and ideological discourse.
