Introduction
摘要
The Guiana Shield, the northern part of the Amazonian Craton, is roughly contained between the Atlantic Ocean, the Amazon River and the Orinoco River. This chapter discusses the rationale for a book on the main building blocks of the Guiana Shield, refers to the early notions on shields and cratons in general and to the nomenclature of the Guiana Shield in particular. A very short recent description of the geology of the Guiana Shield is given.
