Why Are There so Few Women on Our Boards? Gender Issues in Scientific Journals Editorship
摘要
Gender discrimination in science is not easily recognized because scientific research is generally assumed to be gender neutral. However, in recent decades, research on gender imbalance and inequality in academia have gained momentum. In this vein, the gender balance at the highest levels of journal editorial leadership – which represents both a professional honor and an opportunity for professional advancement – remains an under-investigated topic. With the aim of filling this gap, the present work investigates gender balance/imbalance in editorial boards of accounting-focused scientific journals. The results of the study’s empirical analysis of a sample of top-ranked journals indicate that gender balance is still a challenge. This work provides a benchmark for future research by enabling comparisons and longitudinal assessments of future changes over time.
