Providers must expertly make use of a variety of skilled procedures in the care of trauma patients. Historically, these procedures were learned at the bedside in a “see one, do one” apprenticeship model with variable effectiveness. Technical and procedural skills teaching through structured frameworks is more efficient. Skills should be taught with the provision of specific learning objectives, opportunities for observation, and deliberate practice, with specific and constructive feedback. This chapter explains how technical and procedural skills are learned, and provides methods to enhance technical skills teaching for trauma providers.

摘要

Providers must expertly make use of a variety of skilled procedures in the care of trauma patients. Historically, these procedures were learned at the bedside in a “see one, do one” apprenticeship model with variable effectiveness. Technical and procedural skills teaching through structured frameworks is more efficient. Skills should be taught with the provision of specific learning objectives, opportunities for observation, and deliberate practice, with specific and constructive feedback. This chapter explains how technical and procedural skills are learned, and provides methods to enhance technical skills teaching for trauma providers.
