The chapter aims to show that philosophy and satire are not as different as they seem. This is done by examining origins, historical links among satirists and philosophers, different ways to understand satire, different ways to understand philosophy, and the relationship between satire and philosophy as viewed by contemporary philosophers. I suggest that satire and philosophy pursue wisdom via irony, meta-discourse, and the means to their own destruction. The larger aim of the chapter is to spur fruitful interplay among satirists and philosophers when these two groups are not the same.

摘要

The chapter aims to show that philosophy and satire are not as different as they seem. This is done by examining origins, historical links among satirists and philosophers, different ways to understand satire, different ways to understand philosophy, and the relationship between satire and philosophy as viewed by contemporary philosophers. I suggest that satire and philosophy pursue wisdom via irony, meta-discourse, and the means to their own destruction. The larger aim of the chapter is to spur fruitful interplay among satirists and philosophers when these two groups are not the same.
