This chapter demonstrates how the novel interpretations of experience afforded by classical American thought help to illuminate the nature of humor. I concentrate mainly on Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, and John Dewey; toward the end of the chapter, I also draw on Susanne Langer’s reflections on comedy.
