A Novel Blockchain Approach for Continuously Authenticating UAVs to Achieve Zero Trust Principles in 5G-Enabled UAVs
摘要
Drones can provide real-time data transmission, improved signal quality, and reduced interference through beamforming technology The integration of drones (also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)) with 5G connectivity technology is revolutionizing various industries by enabling advanced features and capabilities, especially the reliable and secure network coverage. Security is an essential aspect of any digital or communications system. In drone-powered communication systems, security poses an even greater challenge. This is mainly due to the automated nature of the system and remote wireless communication capabilities. For example, unlike terrestrial/ground base stations, if the flying mobile base station is compromised or attacked, it may lose its cellular connection with the ground station and destroy the UAV itself. One of the promising security solutions is Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA). The use of ZTA in drone/ Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) security is still immature and has a lot of room for improvement. One particular problem is establishing continuous authentication mechanisms that can keep up with the changing operational dynamics of UAVs. Traditional security tactics frequently prove insufficient, either due to their lack of flexibility or failure to effectively handle the full range of possible dangers posed by UAVs. This paper introduces a new approach to equip UAVs with a flying 5G base station to expand 5G coverage and connectivity in rural and limited coverage areas. To ensure secure connectivity in this ecosystem, we introduce a continuous Authentication-based Blockchain Approach that integrates blockchain’s decentralization and transparency with a Zero Trust model we previously developed. The new architecture addresses one of the several obstacles that impede the integration of UAVs into the national airspace, which is real-time verification and airspace usage authentication. These criteria require the UAV to broadcast its identity to the 5G Base stations securely and trustworthy.
