Pilgrimages to Marian shrines are common features of Catholicism worldwide, including in India. Christian pilgrim tour to the small village of Velangkanni, a famous Marian church on the east coast of South India in the state of Tamil Nadu, has turned this small town into the bustling town that it is today with commendable developments in infrastructure (such as roads, railway, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, shops) that has a far-reaching social and political development. The research examines the religious inclusion of the Indian Hindu Tradition where the female form of God is worshiped as Shakti and how Mary’s influence at Velangkanni has attracted non-Christian worshippers to the shrine and the local religious practices influencing the rituals of the shrine, enhancing the socio-religious unification which has led to the economic and political development of the area. The study aims to understand the evident and latent rituals and practices of the Velangkanni church and community engagement through the lens of Pilgrim and tourism theory. The experiential study develops the arguments based on interviews and a review of related literature.
