This chapter provides the second of four methodological lenses through which the book’s themes of experience, evidence and nonverbal and arts-based knowing in music therapy are explored: phenomenology. The concepts of phenomenological eidos, analysis and intersubjectivity are introduced, and the emergence of image-making as form of non-verbal intersubjective communication and other knowing is described. Abstract painted images are shared and a resulting theory of phases of experience is proposed, involving event, awareness, knowing and sharing. The historic and current relationship between music therapy theory and phenomenology is explored through an examination of literature. In keeping with the arts-based, experiential purpose of this book, this chapter is told by the four Roles who emerged as different aspects of the author’s voice, earlier in the enquiry.
