This chapter offers glimpses of music therapy practice through poems, stories and vignettes. They invite those engaging with this book to have, and to respond to, their own arts-based experience. Each piece of creative writing shares an aspect of music therapy experience through imagined encounters between composite, fictionalised characters and the author as music therapist. Earlier in the book, the author has surrendered her single, narrative voice to four Roles, each representing different features of her experience. In this chapter, all four Roles combine to offer a ‘personal statement’ ahead of the creative writing, to acknowledge their privilege, bias, and relationship to the fictionalised characters, as well as to reflect upon issues of ethics, care and integrity. The stories, poems and vignettes are followed by an extended Dialogue in which the Roles consider the knowing that comes from arts-based experience, the conceit of linear narrative and the idea of ‘living artfully’.
