The Russian invasion of Ukraine immediately triggered openness, generosity, and unconditional support among Poles for their neighbours. Extensive research has since provided more profound insights into the experiences of both providing and receiving help. Poles take pride in their supportive attitude, though they speak little of their challenges. This chapter reflects on the experiences of 30 Polish hosts who sheltered Ukrainian war refugees in their private homes. It also analyses the motivations to offer assistance and the associated costs and benefits. The qualitative study results indicate that these motivations include proximity, capability to offer help, professed values, and personal needs accompanied by emotions. The research results are viewed through the lens of empathy. The findings highlight proximity to the help-receiver as the primary motivation for offering assistance. A cost-benefit analysis of shelter assistance reveals positive and unexpected negative consequences for the help providers. Nevertheless, no one regretted offering help.
