Those of us working and studying within higher education sometimes feel like cogs in a vast, uncaring machine. Dominant neoliberal policies perpetuate mechanistic dehumanization, as profit often takes precedence over learning, and individual interests supersede the common good. This book responds to the continuation, if not acceleration, of these dehumanizing forces by suggesting an alternative: Humane Composition Pedagogy (HCP). Our framework centers three tenets—empathy, wellbeing, and belonging—for building humane learning environments. HCP teaches kindness, inclusion, and civic engagement. It enables students to discover and pursue their intrinsic motivations while also caring for each other. We present a vision for humane pedagogy that redefines rigor by rejecting the false dichotomy between human emotion and the development of core writing and critical reasoning skills. A rigorous composition course, we argue, is one that places human connection on par with course content and promotes a rich learning experience by acknowledging multiple ways of knowing and growing. Ultimately, we aim to show that emphasis on these humanistic priorities is not a distraction from, but the basis of, meaningful learning. At the same time, we call for broader organizational change, given that the humane campus is within closest reach wherever the responsibility for cultivating it is shared broadly, in a coalition of administrators, faculty, and students.
