The current political discourse in Russia has been shaped by the policies and rhetoric of President Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party. It has been heavily influenced by nationalist sentiments, which emphasise the importance of defending Russian culture and identity in the face of what is seen as Western encroachment. This is the ideological underpinning behind the conflict initiated by Russia against Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The paper at hand is a part of a larger project exploring the discursive mechanisms involved in forging national identity within the war-related political discourse that dominates Russian media. It reports on the initial phase of this research, aimed at addressing a crucial question: how is a national “We” constructed in this discourse. The empirical data were extracted from the official “addresses to the nation” delivered by the Russian President from the first day of the Russian military conflict with Ukraine up to the first anniversary of the war. The methodological approach falls within the paradigm of Critical Discourse Studies. It incorporates data analysis methods framed by discursive strategies and system network of social actors representations.
