This commentary provides a critical perspective on the evolution of the academic aspects of international business (IB) scholarship. It notes that IB scholarship has rarely been a first mover intellectually and much less so today than during its origin years. This has relegated it to a bit of a “me too” area of academic study. However, more positively, IB scholarship has been very effective at showing the limitations and boundary conditions of the theories it has borrowed from other disciplines and the blending of insights. I argue that the field needs to be more focused and rigorous and less enamored with whatever “hot topics” arise and resist the tendency toward fragmented thinking. In the end, the field has opportunities to do many more basic things well.
