This chapter treats two physically different but mathematically similar problems of linear elastostatics, i.e., plane-strain and plane-stress problems. The stress formulation is used. They both reduce to two-dimensional boundary-value problems of the biharmonic operator mathematically. Rectangular and circular bodies are analyzed as examples, as well as bending of beams.
