Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) among prisoners is a critical and complex mental health issue that warrants careful examination due to its prevalence and far-reaching consequences within correctional settings. Apart from the unique environment, numerous challenges within prisons can either cause MDD or contribute to worsening depression, possibly leading to suicide. Over the last couple of decades, as the number of people in prison has steadily increased, so has the number of prisoners with mental health conditions. No single strategy has been identified to help decrease the risk of depression and possible suicide. It is our opinion that, at a bare minimum, a multilevel and multiteam approach be used to help decrease the risk of depression within this specific population.
