ADHD is a common disorder in the prison population characterized by symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. Known causes of ADHD include genetic factors, environmental exposures, and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. Dopamine and norepinephrine are key neurotransmitters involved in ADHD, affecting cognition, motivation, and attention. Non-stimulants are often used to treat incarcerated individuals with ADHD. After prison, maintaining treatment adherence can be challenging, but effective ADHD treatment has been shown to reduce criminal recidivism, increase employability, and enhance hope and quality of life among those affected.
