In the United States, there are high rates of substance use within the US prison system, estimating that nearly 85% of prison residents have an active substance use disorder (SUD) or are incarcerated related to a crime involving drugs. Prison residents with opioid use disorder (OUD) have an elevated risk for overdose upon release from incarceration. However, treatment during and after imprisonment is effective and should encompass a comprehensive approach, including medications, behavioral therapy, and psycho-social interventions (employment, housing, continuity of care). More research is needed to find enhanced and improved solutions.

摘要

In the United States, there are high rates of substance use within the US prison system, estimating that nearly 85% of prison residents have an active substance use disorder (SUD) or are incarcerated related to a crime involving drugs. Prison residents with opioid use disorder (OUD) have an elevated risk for overdose upon release from incarceration. However, treatment during and after imprisonment is effective and should encompass a comprehensive approach, including medications, behavioral therapy, and psycho-social interventions (employment, housing, continuity of care). More research is needed to find enhanced and improved solutions.
