A New Environmentally Friendly Plaster/Cork Waste Functionally Graded Building Material: Thermal and Physical Characterization

In general cases, the building facades and separation walls are made with brick materials, which leads to overestimate the structure own weight and to reduce the thermal and acoustic insulation features. In this respect, the main objective of this work consists of investigating the physical and thermal characterization of plaster/cork functionally graded members for green construction usage. Accordingly, an environmentally design based on bio-recycling and recovery of agglomerate cork waste to manufacture a bio-based functionally graded material is experimentally characterized. The newly tested design involves to combine two compatible building materials according to a functionally graded transition from a plaster phase to a cork one. Thermal conductivity, water absorption, hydrostatic weighing, and porosity measurements of all designed specimens were provided and discussed to highlight the functionally graded core configuration compared to a conventional one. In addition, all the obtained results were promising compared to literature outcomes. Accordingly, the emphasized results confirm the effectiveness of the innovative designed functionally graded material (FGM), in terms of physical properties and thermal insulation.
