Valorization of Natural Materials in the Composition of Textile-Reinforced Concrete: Mechanical Characterization

Nowadays, efforts to prevent the environmental impact of the building industry are becoming increasingly important; as researchers explore new eco-friendly materials aimed at, reducing its carbon impact. The present work is particularly focused on the substitution of textile-reinforced high-performance mortar (TRC) components with natural and abundant materials. It explores two main parameters, the first is the substitution of overexploited river sand for dune sand, which is abundant over vast areas of the planet, and the second is to reduce the quantity of cement by studying the effect of increasing the sand/binder ratio. Hence, an experimental campaign was realized on the four-point bending behavior of 400 × 100 × 20 mm3 plates and the compression behavior of 50 × 50 × 50 mm3 cubes. The main conclusions are that the use of a sand/binder ratio of 2.2 gives very satisfactory results and that dune sand addition with a ratio of 30% increases load-bearing capacity and ductility.
