Skin is the most visible and viable organ of the human body that constitutes more than 6% of the body by weight. Keratinized cells are the basic constituent of the skin which organize themselves in multiple layers, namely epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. All of the three layers are well established to perform their specific function. Melanin present in the upper layer of the skin acts as a protective pigment and contributes to skin appearance as well. The few millimeter thick skin while acting as a protective barrier of the human body suffers unwanted alterations. These alterations may be augmented with solar radiations, oxidative stress, hormones, environment, diet, and other factors leading to serious skin concerns. When absorbed through the epidermis layer of the skin, various synthetic chemicals and toxic contaminants in substandard cosmetic products can affect the skin barrier functioning. Due to its high sensitivity to toxic substances, skin can suffer from allergic reaction, irritation, inflammation, and in extreme cases skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to understand the consequences of beauty products on the skin and ecosystem. The phenomenon of beautification must relate to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) to ensure that beauty products for skin should not affect the health of the consumers. The semipermeability of skin somehow favors the therapeutic treatment by cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations via topical application. Active agents are transported through skin epidermis via various delivery vehicles such as emulsion, gels, vesicles, and liposomes. A variety of products have been developed to enhance the aesthetic appearance and the health of the human skin, thus increasing research in this field.
