Impact of Divergent Vehicle’s Speed on Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network Routing Protocols

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are vehicle-based systems that use newly developed information and communication technology to increase safety, efficiency, trip time, and comfort. They also cut down on delays and fuel use. Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) has gained research attention from both academia and business as a component of ITS and Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) are a type of MANET that evolved as a result of IVC, and they enable communication among nearby as well as between vehicles without the requirement for permanent and fixed infrastructure. It is a new emerging technology that allows vehicles to establish their own network by combining ad hoc networks, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and cellular technology to accomplish intelligent inter-vehicle communications. In comparison to ordinary MANETs, VANETs have higher and limited node mobility, as well as more frequent changes in network architecture, both of which can have a significant impact on routing protocol performance. Therefore, routing protocols created for MANETs cannot be used directly to VANETs. Main challenge with VANET position-based routing protocols is frequent network disconnection induced by high-speed vehicle mobility. This paper showed the significance of diverse speeds on position based routing protocols- Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), Ad-hoc On Demand Vector (AODV), Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). The results are analyzed on the basis of performance metrics- Receive Rate, Packets Received, Basic Safety Message (BSM) Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), and Medium Access Control (MAC)/Physical (PHY) overhead. DSR performed 1.823% better in receive rate, 1.821% better in packets received, DSDV performed 1.43% better in BSM PDR, and 1.39% better in MAC/PHY overhead. The selection of best routing protocol in the designed scenario is the main contribution of this research work.
