Providing Companionship
摘要
AI, especially chatbots, are now used as romantic and platonic companions. The primary outcome for these relationships is whether we are satisfied with the quality of it. AI relationships have many different aspects compared to humans, including limited physical world interaction and their connection to for-profit companies. People often engage with them in order to reduce loneliness, and their experiences are mixed. Oftentimes, AI and robots are penalized compared to humans for aspects of their conversation and physicality, leading to people to compare them to humans as a gold standard of relationships. However, anthropomorphism and high-quality communication increase satisfaction levels. And there is a preference for AI conversations and companionship if people presume other humans may be judgmental or disappointed. While there are fewer studies on sex robots, these have shown early evidence of machine penalties, but also some gender differences in their acceptance. AI providing companionship can be experienced as real love by some, but others penalize this sort of relationship as a fabricated love and a poor substitute.
