The benefits of physical activity and exercise are inarguably numerous, especially in the context of health benefits. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that results in an increase in caloric requirements over resting energy expenditure (Caspersen et al. Public Health Rep. 100:126–31, 1985). Exercise, on the other hand, is a type of physical activity consisting of planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movements that are performed to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness (Howley, Med Sci Sport Exer. 33:S364, 2001). The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise 5 days per week in order to maintain cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular fitness for healthy adults (Garber et al. Medicine and science in sports and exercise. 43:1334–59, 2011).
