Hip pain is a common clinical problem and affects patients of all ages. Because the differential diagnosis of hip pain is broad, successful diagnosis and treatment can be challenging. As with many medical conditions, the first step of the medical evaluation entails obtaining a thorough history and physical exam. Imaging modalities including radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are often helpful. The treatment of hip pain is frequently nonoperative; however, depending on the chronicity of symptoms, severity of the pain, or extent of injury, treatment may involve surgery. This review covers many common causes of hip pain, as well as dangerous diagnoses that require urgent treatment.
