In this chapter, we introduce the three personas that emerge in office-forward workplaces: the Officer, the Progressive, and the Producer. We describe three psychological factors that push employees into one of these personas: disparate access to flexible work, varying degrees of attachment to the physical workspace, and varying beliefs about the role of technology in the modern workplace. We reveal that employees with a strong preference “to office”—a curious neologism many kept using—have adopted the Officer persona; that employees who are “excited to see all the smiling faces” once they come into the office, but who have come to see their company’s office-forward strategy as “toxic, old-fashioned, and non-inclusive,” have developed into Progressives; that employees who “don’t miss or care about the social stuff” and who prioritize task accomplishment and personal productivity away from the “office drama” have fallen into the Producer persona.
